Obsidian en spaced repetition, voor studenten
Obsidian and spaced repetition, for students
Van aantekeningen naar flashcards
From notes to flashcards
You already know that testing yourself works. You probably still have zero flashcards. That is not on you: in most apps, making a card is a separate chore after you study. This guide gets you a vault in half an hour where your notes quiz you back, using nothing more than two colons in a line you were writing anyway.
Wat je tijdens college typt
What you type during a lecture
# Normal distribution #flashcards/statistics Symmetric and bell shaped around the mean. What share lies within 1 SD?::68 percent See also [[Standard deviation]].

Waarom dit werkt
Why this works
In 2013 John Dunlosky and his colleagues compared ten study techniques and rated them on the strength of the evidence. Two came out strong: testing yourself and spreading your repetitions over time. Highlighting, summarising and rereading scored low, which is exactly what most students do.
Rereading does feel better. The material looks familiar, and you easily mistake that familiarity for knowing it. In an exam the text is not in front of you.
Spaced repetition combines the two: you retrieve the answer from memory, and the software schedules that moment just before you lose it. You do not need to understand more than that.
Why in Obsidian and not in a separate app
The problem with flashcards has never been the idea. It is making them.
In a separate app you switch over, work out what is worth testing, type a question, type an answer and pick a deck. This is far too much work.
In Obsidian that step disappears. Your notes are plain text files, and while you type you put :: between a question and an answer. That is the card.
Wat je er verder aan hebt
What else you get
- Your notes stay yours. Markdown filesPlain text with a few punctuation marks for formatting:
#makes a heading,**text**makes bold. You can open such a file with any program, from Notepad to an editor ten years from now. in a folder on your own drive that you can still open in four years, with or without Obsidian. - Kaarten staan in hun context.
- Cards sit in their context. If a card stops making sense, the explanation is in the same note.
- Notes link to each other. Use
[[double brackets]]to connect concepts, so you see where something else comes up.
Aan de slag
Getting started
-
Installeer Obsidian en maak een vault
Install Obsidian and create a vault
Download it from obsidian.md. On first launch it asks for a vault, a folder on your drive where your notes will live.
Zet die map in je cloudmap, bijvoorbeeld
OneDrive/Studie. Put that folder in your cloud folder, for example
OneDrive/Study. That gives you a backup straight away. One vault for your entire degree is enough. -
Maak je eerste notitie
Write your first note
Ctrl N creates a note and the first line is its title. You need no more formatting than this to start:
# Grote kop ## Kleinere kop Gewone tekst.
# Big heading ## Smaller heading Plain text. **Bold** and *italic*. - a list - another point > A quote or something that stands out Point at another note: [[Standard deviation]]
-
Organiseer nog niet te veel
Do not organise too much yet
Do not design a system of tags and subfolders before you have any notes. Search beats tidying, and you can always move things later.
De plugin en de vijf vormen
The plugin and the five forms
The plugin is called Spaced Repetition, by Stephen Mwangi. To install: Settings → Community plugins → Browse, search for "Spaced Repetition", install it and turn it on.
Then put #flashcards somewhere in a note. That is the signal: look in this file for cards. Want a separate stack per course? Use #flashcards/statistics, which creates a deck by that name.

Wat er daarna gebeurt
What happens next
Click the icon in the left ribbon or run the command Review flashcards from all notes. You get the question, click to reveal the answer, and rate yourself with three buttons.
- Hard (1): je wist het niet of nauwelijks. Het interval wordt gehalveerd.
- Hard (1): you did not know it, or barely. The interval is halved.
- Good (2): you knew it. The interval is multiplied by this card's ease, 2.5 by default.
- Easy (3): meteen goed, zonder nadenken.
- Easy (3): instantly right, without thinking. Same calculation plus a 1.3 bonus, and the ease goes up.
That ease is per card and moves along: 20 points down on Hard, 20 up on Easy, with 130 as the floor. So a card you keep missing comes back more often by itself. Press 0 to reset a card all the way to the start.
The card starts at a one day interval with ease 250. From 8 days on, the plugin nudges the date by a few percent so everything does not come back on the same day. That is left out here.
The schedule is stored in the note itself, as an HTML comment after the card. You do not see it in Obsidian, but it is plain text that travels with your file:
Vuistregel 68-95-99,7::binnen 1, 2 en 3 SD van het gemiddelde <!--SR:!2026-09-24,21,250--> ↑ datum ↑ dagen ↑ ease
The 68-95-99.7 rule::within 1, 2 and 3 SD of the mean <!--SR:!2026-09-24,21,250--> ↑ date ↑ days ↑ ease
So there is no database and no account. Put your vault on another computer and your progress is simply there.
Goede kaarten maken
Making good cards
Now that making cards is easy, this part decides whether it works. The classic mistake is turning every line on a slide into a card. You then answer those perfectly and still go blank in the exam.
Eén ding per kaart
One thing per card
Schrijf een vraag, geen kop
Write a question, not a heading
Never make a card of something you do not understand yet
This is the most important rule and the most ignored one. Material you do not understand gives you loose words with nothing behind them. Write it out in your own words in the note first, and make the card after that.
Blijf je een kaart missen, herschrijf hem
If you keep missing a card, rewrite it
A card you miss for the fifth time is usually just a bad card: too much at once, or ambiguously worded. Open the note and split it. Grinding harder does not fix it.
De routine
The routine
Ten minutes a day works, two hours on Saturday does not. Attach it to something you already do, like your first coffee or the bus.
Make your cards while you read. The moment you think you will need something later, drop in a ::. Five seconds of work, and it is already in your own words.
Skipped two weeks and two hundred cards are waiting? Do thirty a day until you are back, and delete whatever you can already see is pointless. An empty stack beats a stack you avoid.
Obsidian works on your phone too, with an app for iOS and Android. You can sync with Obsidian Sync for about four euros a month, or for free through iCloud or a folder you already sync.
During exam week the Cram command runs you through a whole deck without disturbing your schedule. Useful the day before, though it does not replace the weeks before that.
Als je verder wilt
Going further
Only after the above has been running for a few weeks. Everything below is fun, and none of it helps you remember.
- Templates for a fixed layout per lecture or book chapter.
- Dataview to build lists from your own notes, for example everything you still need to work out.
- De graph view, het bolletjesplaatje. Mooi, en zelden nuttig.
- The graph view, the ball-of-dots picture. Pretty, and rarely useful.
- Zettelkasten, a way to link individual insights instead of filing them per course.
- The plugin's settings, if you want to tune the algorithm or switch to FSRS.
